Thomas56's Profile

I am 55 years old. In July of 2011 I was diagnosed with cancer of the left tonsil and left lymph nodes of my neck. It is now December of 2011 and I have just completed the treatment. Treatment consisted of two rounds of induction chemo (TPF) over six weeks. The T is for Taxotere, the P is for Cisplatin, and the F for 5-FU. During the first round of chemo I developed a neutropenic fever and ended up in the hospital for four days. Shorty after being in the hospital I developed blood clots from the PIC in my arm. I am now on blood thinners too. During the chemo I began to lose my hair so I had my wife shave my head. The second round of chemo went much better. The second part of the treatment was 7 weeks of radiation chemo. I had chemo one day a week and radiation on my neck every day for 7 weeks. The chemo wasn't as intense as in the first round. It consisted of taxol and carboplatin. Like the first round of chemo I experienced dry mouth, nausea, loss of appetite, and mouth sores. The only thing, in the radiation phase, it is much more prolonged and intense. I still cannot eat by mouth because of nausea and dry mouth (lack of saliva). Between the induction chemo and radiation, I had a break of a little over 2 weeks. It was the last time that I felt somewhat normal. Just before the radiation began, I had a PEG (feeding tube) placed. I have been using the tube since about the third week of radiation. I recommend to anyone getting this kind of treatment. It becomes impossible to eat through your mouth.
